The Environment Protocol
Light, air, water and materials — the largest untouched variable for most people who already exercise.
Most people will read a page like this, agree with it, and change nothing. That is not a character flaw and it is not an information problem. It is a predictable set of cognitive biases, and if you already live this way, those biases are the thing standing between you and everyone you have ever failed to convince.
So this protocol starts there — not with what to do, but with why the people around you don't.
A note on where this comes from. I have lived two years, three months and twelve days in the jungle, in giant premium glamping tents, and travelled across fifty countries over fifteen years. I have experienced more environmental conditions than most people see on television. What follows is what that taught me, organised so it is useful.

Section 1 — Why the 73.6% Don't Act
The figures are not in dispute. Americans spend about 90% of their time indoors, where concentrations of some pollutants run two to five times higher than outdoors — occasionally more than a hundred times higher. That is the EPA's own position, not a wellness claim.
So why does almost nobody act on it?
Not ignorance. Most people have heard some version of this. The blockage is structural, and it has names.
The seven biases that keep the default in place
1. Present bias. The cost of changing your environment is paid today, in money and inconvenience. The benefit arrives as an absence — a disease you don't get, decades from now. Human decision-making discounts that future benefit steeply. This is why the same person who will pay for a gym membership they can feel will not replace a mattress they cannot.
2. Habituation. You cannot smell your own house. Olfactory adaptation is fast and near-total, so the person living inside a heavily off-gassing home has no sensory signal that anything is wrong. Their baseline has drifted, and the drift is invisible from the inside. This is the single most under-appreciated barrier, because it means the problem is literally imperceptible to the person who has it.
3. Single-action bias. Someone buys one air purifier and mentally closes the file. The purchase discharges the anxiety, so the remaining ninety per cent of the exposure — the cookware, the fragrance, the bedding, the water — never gets examined. Partial action is often the end of action, not the start.
4. System justification. "If it were really dangerous, it would be banned." This is a deeply comfortable belief and it is doing enormous work. It lets people treat regulatory permission as a safety verdict, when regulation mostly lags evidence by decades and rarely tests combinations at all.
5. Overwhelm into helplessness. "Everything causes cancer these days." This sounds like scepticism. It is actually surrender — and it is a rational response to being handed a list of forty things to fear with no ranking. Given a problem that appears unbounded, people opt out entirely rather than act partially.
6. Social proof. Nobody in their circle does this. Filtering your shower water reads as eccentric rather than sensible, and the social cost of being the odd one is paid immediately while the benefit is invisible. People will accept a worse outcome to avoid looking strange.
7. Reactance. Being told what to do about your own home triggers pushback regardless of the content. The more moralised the delivery, the stronger the resistance. This is the one you control, and it is the one most often mishandled by people who are right.
What actually lands
If you already live this way, you have probably tried to explain it and watched it fail. The failures are usually predictable from the list above.
Lead with the thing they can perceive. Habituation means the argument from invisible harm is dead on arrival. The argument from noticeable change is not. Sleep quality in a genuinely dark, cool room. How a room feels ten minutes after the windows are opened. Give them one change they can feel this week, and the sensory evidence does the persuading you cannot.
Rank ruthlessly; give exactly one thing. Overwhelm is the failure mode, so a list is worse than useless. The highest-yield single change for most households is removing plastic from hot food contact — it is cheap, immediate, and requires no belief in anything. One change also defeats present bias, because the cost is small enough not to trigger the trade-off.
Never moralise, and never frame it as purity. Reactance is triggered by the posture, not the fact. "This is what I do and here's why" survives; "you should stop poisoning your family" does not, even when it is closer to true.
Concede the uncertainty out loud. Counter-intuitively, saying "the evidence on this one is genuinely mixed" buys enormous credibility, because it separates you from the wellness-absolutism they are pattern-matching you to. It also disarms system justification: you are not claiming a conspiracy, you are pointing out that regulation is slow.
Let cost do the work where it can. Opening windows is free. Morning daylight is free. Taking shoes off indoors is free. Starting with the free interventions removes the "this is a rich person's hobby" objection before it forms — and that objection, unaddressed, ends the conversation permanently.
Expect it to take years, and stop measuring in conversations. Most people who change do so long after the conversation that started it, and they will not credit you. If you need the win, you will moralise, and moralising is what loses it.
Section 2 — For the Casually Active
You exercise. You eat reasonably well. Your environment is almost certainly the largest untouched variable in your health, and it is the one nobody optimises because it does not feel like effort.
The premise here is that you already do the obvious things. What follows is the step from not unhealthy to deliberate.
Light is the highest-yield lever, and it is free
Your circadian rhythm governs sleep, energy, mood, metabolism and immune function, and light is the primary signal setting it.
- Bright light — ideally sunlight — within thirty minutes of waking, before the phone. Ten to fifteen minutes outside or at a large window.
- Work near windows. Indoor daytime brightness of at least 1,000 lux.
- Dim two to three hours before bed; warm colour temperature, 2700K or lower.
- Sleep in a genuinely dark, cool room.
Morning light triggers the cortisol awakening response and starts the timer on that evening's melatonin. Skip it and you fight your energy all day and your sleep all night.
Air is the one you cannot perceive
Twenty thousand breaths a day. Open windows for ten minutes daily, even in winter. Cross-ventilate where the building allows. Hold humidity between 40 and 60% — a monitor costs almost nothing and tells you more than any purifier marketing will.
Remove plastic from hot food contact
This is the highest-return single change in the whole protocol, and the least demanding.
- Cook on stainless steel, cast iron or ceramic. Retire non-stick.
- Store and reheat in glass, never plastic.
- Glass or steel bottles. Never drink from a plastic bottle that has been hot.
- Loose-leaf tea or unbleached bags — many tea bags shed plastic particles directly into near-boiling water.
On the widely-quoted "credit card of plastic per week" figure: it originates in a 2019 University of Newcastle analysis commissioned by WWF, and the methodology has been contested since. The direction of travel is well supported; the precise quantity is not. Use it as an argument for reducing exposure, not as a number you would defend.
Materials touch you for eight hours a night
Natural fibres against skin where you can — bedding first, because that is eight hours of continuous contact. Fragrance-free detergent. Personal care products with short, legible ingredient lists. Synthetic fragrance is the easiest single category to eliminate and among the most chemically complex to defend.
Section 3 — For the Deliberately Clean
You have done the above. The remaining exposure is in systems — water, air handling, furniture, fields — and it costs real money. This is where the diminishing returns begin, so sequence matters.
Water, in order of return
Multi-stage filtration: sediment, then carbon for chemicals and taste, then reverse osmosis for microplastics and heavy metals, then remineralisation to put back what RO strips. Add a shower filter — chlorine exposure through skin and inhalation during a hot shower is not trivial, and it is the step most people skip because drinking water feels like the whole problem.
Air, beyond ventilation
True HEPA — not "HEPA-type" — down to 0.3 microns, paired with activated carbon for VOCs and off-gassing. The pairing matters: HEPA alone does nothing for the chemical load, which in a newer, tighter, more synthetic house is the larger share. Monitor PM2.5 against the WHO guideline rather than trusting a light on the front of a machine.
The hidden material load
- Flame retardants in conventional mattresses and upholstery
- Formaldehyde in particleboard and some flooring
- VOCs from new carpet, paint and building materials
- Phthalates in vinyl flooring and synthetic fragrance
Replace on the natural replacement cycle rather than in a purge — natural latex without flame retardants, solid wood over particleboard, wool or jute over synthetic carpet. Buying it all at once is how this becomes a rich person's hobby instead of a practice.
Fields and grounding
Reduce unnecessary EMF exposure where it is free to do so: router on a timer, phone out of the bedroom or in airplane mode, bed away from the electrical panel, ethernet where practical. Direct skin contact with earth where you can get it.
Stated plainly: the evidence base for non-thermal EMF effects at domestic exposure levels is contested, and I am not going to pretend otherwise. These interventions are cheap and carry no downside, which is the honest case for them — not certainty.
Section 4 — For the Protocol Tier
Roughly one person in two hundred. At this level the environment is instrumented rather than merely improved.
Automated circadian lighting. Colour temperature tracking the day: 5,000–10,000 lux blue-white in the morning, warming through amber to red-only at night. Dawn simulation on the wake end, sunset simulation on the sleep end. 10,000 lux therapy boxes for fifteen to thirty minutes each morning, positioned sixteen to twenty-four inches from the face — most useful in winter and for anyone working indoors year-round.
Whole-house systems. Point-of-entry filtration rather than point-of-use. Real-time PM2.5, VOC and humidity telemetry, so you learn how cooking, cleaning and weather actually move your indoor air rather than guessing.
Biophilic integration. Living walls and vertical gardens for genuine air exchange, water features, maximised natural light through glazing or skylights, indoor herb growing. Natural materials and organic geometry over hard synthetic angles.
Acoustic design. Identify and treat the actual noise sources. Soft furnishings to kill echo, masking where masking is warranted, and defined quiet zones for restoration and focused work.
Where This Connects
Environment is the protocol that most directly determines the others. Poor light undermines the Restoration Protocol; a contaminated water supply undermines Nutrition; an over-stimulating space undermines Cognition.
