Sleight of Mouth — The Fifteen Ways to Take a Belief Apart

A belief is a claim with joints. This is the map of where they are.

In 1980s work that became Sleight of Mouth, Robert Dilts took Richard Bandler’s argument style apart and found it was not improvisation. It was a finite set of moves — fourteen of them — each attacking a stated belief from a different angle. Learn the set and you stop arguing by instinct, because you can see which angles you have not tried yet.

The moves work because a belief is rarely one claim. It is two claims joined at a hinge: a cause and an effect (“A, because B”), or two things asserted to be the same thing (“A means B”). Dilts calls these cause-effect and complex equivalence. Every move below is a way of pushing on one of those two terms, on the hinge between them, or on the frame the whole sentence sits inside.

What follows is that set drawn as a map. The belief sits in the middle. The moves sit around it, and where they sit is the point: time runs left to right, so Intent is behind the belief and Consequence is in front of it. Abstraction runs bottom to top, so Chunk Up is above and Chunk Down is below. You can read the shape of an argument off the picture before you read any of the words.

The fifteen moves, by what they do to the frame

Fourteen are Dilts’ patterns. Redefine takes two slots here — one for each term of the belief. The four groupings are ours, not his.

Change the frame

Move up or down a level of abstraction, or widen the window the belief is judged in.

  • Meta FrameChallenge the basis for the belief.

    Step outside the argument entirely and ask what kind of belief this is, and where it came from. Not "is it true" but "what is this a belief about".

  • Chunk UpGeneralize in order to change the relationship defined by the belief.

    Go up a level of abstraction until the specific claim dissolves into the larger one it belongs to.

  • Hierarchy of CriteriaRe-assess the belief based on a more important criterion.

    Name something the person values more than the thing the belief protects, and rank them out loud.

  • Frame SizeRe-evaluate the implication of the belief in the context of a longer (or shorter) time frame.

    Change the window. A year, a lifetime, a generation — most beliefs are sized to one span and fail in another.

  • Chunk DownLook at a specific element that challenges the belief.

    Go down into the detail until the generalisation stops covering what is actually there.

Change whose view it is

Ask who holds the belief, how they know, and whether it survives being turned on itself.

  • Model of the WorldLook at the belief from a different perspective (model of the world).

    Ask how this looks to someone whose interests differ — and whose map is not yours.

  • Reality StrategyRe-assess the belief based on the fact that beliefs are based on specific perceptions.

    Ask how the person came to know this. Beliefs are built from particular evidence, and the evidence can be examined.

  • Apply to SelfUse key aspects of the belief to challenge the belief.

    Turn the claim on itself and see whether it survives its own standard.

Move along the timeline

Step backwards to what was wanted, or forwards to what follows.

    Step back to what the belief is trying to protect. Almost every belief is guarding something reasonable.

  • ConsequenceFocus a consequence that leads to challenging the belief.

    Step forward to what actually follows if the belief is acted on.

    Suggest the belief is aimed at the wrong target — that something else is really at stake.

Restate the terms

Swap a word, find the exception, or hold the shape of the claim up against something else.

  • Redefine CauseUse words that are similar but may infer something different.

    Swap the wording of the cause for something near-synonymous that carries a different charge.

  • Redefine EffectUse words that are similar but may infer something different.

    Do the same to the effect — restate what is claimed to follow, in words that change its colour.

  • Counter ExampleFind an exception that challenges the generalization defined by the belief.

    One clear case where the rule does not hold. Generalisations are brittle against a single exception.

  • AnalogyUse an analogy or metaphor that challenges the generalization defined by the belief.

    Hold the shape of the claim up against something else with the same shape and a different verdict.

Notice what the map exposes that a list would not. Intent and Consequence point in opposite directions and do opposite work: one grants the belief its reasonable motive, the other follows it forward until it embarrasses itself. Chunk Up and Chunk Down sit above and below the same claim, and both dissolve it — one by making it too small to matter, the other by making it too specific to survive.

    This is a claim about political mechanism dressed as a claim about budgets. Whether the spending ratio is right and whether activism is the lever that moves it are two separate questions, and only one of them is being argued.

    Every society decides how much of the present it will spend on a future it will not personally see. Health budgets are one instance of that decision, not a special case.

    There is a role for healthcare spend on urgent and acute needs in the present, but the ratio should not be 99.9 : 0.1. Long-term outranks short-term — until someone is dying today.

    Over a single parliament, the acute spend is unarguable. Over a century, the ratio looks like a civilisation that spent everything treating what it had already decided not to prevent.

    To a health minister with a four-year term and a waiting list, "long-term" is the category that never survives a budget round — not because it is wrong, but because nobody is measured on it.

    How would we know this was working? "Longevity investment" has no agreed measure, which means the belief cannot currently be checked — only asserted.

    If a small coordinated group really can redirect national spending, then the group currently holding the 99.9% is also small and coordinated — which is an argument about who organises, not about what is true.

    The real bottleneck may not be the size of the budget but what counts as an approvable endpoint. Ageing is not a registerable indication, so money aimed at it has nowhere licensed to land.

    Tobacco control moved almost entirely through litigation, taxation and disclosure rules. It was one of the largest longevity gains in modern history and it did not come from a redirected research budget.

    It is the argument for maintaining the roof rather than buying more buckets — right in general, and no comfort at all to the person standing under the leak tonight.

This is where the map earns its keep. A belief held on purpose has usually been defended along one or two axes already, and the holder has answers there. The moves they have not heard are the ones that matter — and on a map you can see which those are, because they are the nodes nobody has touched.

Using it on a belief of your own

Write the belief as two terms and a hinge. If you cannot split it into “A because B” or “A means B”, you do not yet have the belief — you have a mood. Getting the sentence right is most of the work, and it is the step people skip.

Then walk the map rather than free-associating. The value is not that any single move is decisive; most are not. It is that fifteen fixed positions make it obvious which angles you have not tried, and the mind reaching for a counter-argument reliably returns to the same three.

Turn it on yourself first. The moves are a persuasion tool, and that is exactly why the honest use is inward. A belief of your own that survives all fifteen is worth keeping. One that does not was being held for a reason you had not examined — which is the same finding, arrived at conversationally, that the Cognitive-Motivational Bias Matrix arrives at structurally.

What is Dilts’, and what is ours

  • Dilts’: the fourteen patterns and their definitions, and the two belief structures they operate on. The one-line definition under each move is his wording.
  • Ours: the map. Dilts publishes no diagram, no grouping of the fourteen, and no split of Redefine. The four families here, and giving Redefine a slot under each term, are drafting aids we added to make the set learnable — not part of the source model.
  • The reframes themselves are illustrative, not claims about the world. They are written to demonstrate each move, and several of them contradict each other on purpose — that is what a full sweep of the map looks like.
