Sleight of Mouth — The Fifteen Ways to Take a Belief Apart

A belief is a claim with joints. This is the map of where they are.

Robert Dilts spent the 1980s taking Richard Bandler’s arguing apart, expecting to find improvisation. He found a finite set instead: fourteen moves, each coming at a stated belief from a different angle. That sounds like a modest result. It is not, because arguing on instinct means reaching for whichever objection happens to be nearest, and knowing the set means noticing the ones you never reach for.

The moves work because a belief is almost never a single claim. It is two claims joined at a hinge, and the hinge is usually the softest part of it.

“I enjoy Coca-Cola because it tastes good” puts one thing behind another as its cause. “Too many responsibilities means I cannot train” asserts that two quite different things are the same thing. Dilts calls these cause-effect and complex equivalence. Either way you end up with three places to push rather than one: the first term, the second term, and the join between them.

What follows is that set drawn as a map. The belief sits in the middle and the moves are arranged around it — not for tidiness, but according to what each one actually does.

How to read the map

Both directions carry meaning. Intent sits before the belief because it asks what the belief was protecting in the first place, and Consequence sits after it because it asks what follows once you act on it.

Height works the same way. The further up a move sits, the further back it stands from the claim, which is why Meta Frame runs across the very top — it frames the whole argument rather than either term of it.

On the real map every one of those positions is filled by a named move, and its colour marks which of the four families it belongs to. Select any of them and the panel underneath shows that move applied to the belief in front of you.

A belief nobody defends

Start somewhere with nothing at stake. Nobody’s sense of themselves is bound up in a soft drink, so the moves land cleanly and you can watch the mechanism rather than the argument. Select any node to see that move applied.

A list of fourteen patterns would not show you what the map does. Look at Intent and Consequence, sitting at opposite ends of the same line.

They do opposite work. Intent grants the belief its reasonable motive, because nobody drinks Coca-Cola for no reason at all. Consequence takes the same belief and follows it forward until it embarrasses itself. Neither is much of a rebuttal alone, and together they close a pincer.

The vertical pair behaves the same way. Chunk Up and Chunk Down sit above and below the claim and both dissolve it — one by making it too small to matter, the other by making it too specific to survive.

Using it on a belief of your own

Write the belief as two terms and a hinge. If you cannot get it into “A because B” or “A means B”, you do not have a belief yet — you have a mood. This is most of the work, and it is the step almost everyone skips.

Then walk the map rather than free-associating. No single move is decisive and most are not meant to be. The value is that fifteen fixed positions make the gaps obvious, where a mind reaching for a counter-argument returns to the same three every time.

Turn it on yourself before anyone else. These are persuasion moves, which is exactly why the honest use is inward. A belief of your own that survives all fifteen has earned its place, and one that does not was being held for a reason you had never looked at.

The fifteen moves in full

Everything above is the same fifteen moves applied twice. Here they are on their own, with what each one does and the definition Dilts gives it, grouped by what they change about the belief.

Fourteen of these are Dilts’ patterns. Redefine takes two slots here, one for each term of the belief. The four groupings are ours.

Change the frame

Move up or down a level of abstraction, or widen the window the belief is judged in.

  • Meta Frame

    Step outside the argument entirely and ask what kind of belief this is, and where it came from. Not "is it true" but "what is this a belief about".

  • Chunk Up

    Go up a level of abstraction until the specific claim dissolves into the larger one it belongs to.

  • Hierarchy of Criteria

    Name something the person values more than the thing the belief protects, and rank them out loud.

    Dilts: “Re-assess the belief based on a more important criterion.

  • Frame Size

    Change the window. A year, a lifetime, a generation — most beliefs are sized to one span and fail in another.

  • Chunk Down

    Go down into the detail until the generalisation stops covering what is actually there.

Change whose view it is

Ask who holds the belief, how they know, and whether it survives being turned on itself.

  • Model of the World

    Ask how this looks to someone whose interests differ — and whose map is not yours.

    Dilts: “Look at the belief from a different perspective (model of the world).

  • Reality Strategy

    Ask how the person came to know this. Beliefs are built from particular evidence, and the evidence can be examined.

    Dilts: “Re-assess the belief based on the fact that beliefs are based on specific perceptions.

  • Apply to Self

    Turn the claim on itself and see whether it survives its own standard.

    Dilts: “Use key aspects of the belief to challenge the belief.

Move along the timeline

Step backwards to what was wanted, or forwards to what follows.

  • Intent

    Step back to what the belief is trying to protect. Almost every belief is guarding something reasonable.

  • Consequence

    Step forward to what actually follows if the belief is acted on.

    Dilts: “Focus a consequence that leads to challenging the belief.

  • Another Outcome

    Suggest the belief is aimed at the wrong target — that something else is really at stake.

    Dilts: “Propose a different outcome that challenges the relevancy of the belief.

Restate the terms

Swap a word, find the exception, or hold the shape of the claim up against something else.

  • Redefine Cause

    Swap the wording of the cause for something near-synonymous that carries a different charge.

    Dilts: “Use words that are similar but may infer something different.

  • Redefine Effect

    Do the same to the effect — restate what is claimed to follow, in words that change its colour.

    Dilts: “Use words that are similar but may infer something different.

  • Counter Example

    One clear case where the rule does not hold. Generalisations are brittle against a single exception.

  • Analogy

    Hold the shape of the claim up against something else with the same shape and a different verdict.

Appendix — a second map

The example above works because everybody already has instincts about a soft drink. This one is the opposite case: a specific, technical claim from a field most people have never formed any view on at all.

That makes it the more honest test of the method. Where you have no ready-made opinion, the fifteen positions are doing the whole job rather than dressing up something you already thought.

    This is a claim about political mechanism dressed as a claim about budgets. Whether the spending ratio is right and whether activism is the lever that moves it are two separate questions, and only one of them is being argued.

    Every society decides how much of the present it will spend on a future it will not personally see. Health budgets are one instance of that decision, not a special case.

    There is a role for healthcare spend on urgent and acute needs in the present, but the ratio should not be 99.9 : 0.1. Long-term outranks short-term — until someone is dying today.

    Over a single parliament, the acute spend is unarguable. Over a century, the ratio looks like a civilisation that spent everything treating what it had already decided not to prevent.

    To a health minister with a four-year term and a waiting list, "long-term" is the category that never survives a budget round — not because it is wrong, but because nobody is measured on it.

    How would we know this was working? "Longevity investment" has no agreed measure, which means the belief cannot currently be checked — only asserted.

    If a small coordinated group really can redirect national spending, then the group currently holding the 99.9% is also small and coordinated — which is an argument about who organises, not about what is true.

    This is different from betting on a research milestone or a regulatory / jurisdictional arbitrage breakthrough. It wants a durable shift, not a lucky one.

    Longevity would accelerate if health budget funding is allocated more to 'long-term solutions'.

    The real bottleneck may not be the size of the budget but what counts as an approvable endpoint. Ageing is not a registerable indication, so money aimed at it has nowhere licensed to land.

    A higher ratio (than is apparent) of public funds — all money — should support maximum longevity rather than just getting by short-term.

    Tobacco control moved almost entirely through litigation, taxation and disclosure rules. It was one of the largest longevity gains in modern history and it did not come from a redirected research budget.

    It is the argument for maintaining the roof rather than buying more buckets — right in general, and no comfort at all to the person standing under the leak tonight.

Several of these reframes cut against the side making the argument, and that is what a full sweep of the map produces. Working it honestly means writing the moves that damage your own position alongside the ones that help it.

What is Dilts’, and what is ours

  • Dilts’: the fourteen patterns, their definitions, and the two belief structures they operate on. The one-line definition under each move is his wording rather than ours.
  • Ours: the map itself. Dilts publishes no diagram, no grouping of the fourteen, and no split of Redefine. The four families here, and giving Redefine a slot under each term of the belief, are drafting aids we added to make the set easier to learn.
  • The reframes are illustrative, not claims about the world. They exist to demonstrate each move, and several of them contradict each other on purpose — which is what a full sweep of the map looks like.
