The Healthy House

A room-by-room blueprint: what is working against you, what to change first, and what it costs.

The Environment Protocol organises this knowledge by phase — what to do first, second, third. That is the right shape for a programme and the wrong shape for a Saturday.

This is the same material re-cut by place. You are standing in a room. What in here is working against you, what do you change first, and what does it cost?

Two things it deliberately is not. It does not name brands — product lines change faster than any page can track, and naming them turns a reference into an advertisement. And it does not pretend everything is equally urgent: each room ends with the one change worth making first.

Before You Start

You spend about 90% of your time indoors, where concentrations of some pollutants run two to five times higher than outdoors — occasionally more than a hundred times. That is the EPA's position, and it is the entire case for this page.

But the reason most people fail at this is not the size of the problem. It is that they try to fix the whole house at once, spend a fortune, and stop. So:

Sequence by hours of exposure, not by how bad the thing sounds. You spend eight hours a night in one room, in continuous skin contact with a small number of materials. That beats almost anything in the rest of the house on exposure alone. Bedroom first.

Replace on the natural cycle wherever you can. Buying a whole house of new things at once is how this becomes a rich person's hobby instead of a practice. The exceptions — the things worth replacing now rather than when they wear out — are called out below.

Do the free things first. Opening windows, taking shoes off indoors, morning daylight and a cooler bedroom cost nothing, and doing them first removes the "this is for people with money" objection before it forms.


Bedroom

Why it leads: eight continuous hours, most of it in direct skin contact with bedding, in the room where light and temperature control your sleep. Nothing else in the house has that exposure profile.

What the default is. A synthetic mattress, synthetic bedding, a warm room, light leaking in, and a phone within arm's reach.

What to change, in order:

  1. Darkness and temperature. Genuinely dark, genuinely cool. Free or nearly free, and it acts on sleep quality tonight rather than in a decade.
  2. Bedding before mattress. Natural fibres — cotton, linen, wool — against skin. It is the cheapest way to buy back most of the contact hours, and you can do it this week.
  3. Phone out of the room. An actual alarm clock costs less than a takeaway.
  4. The mattress, on replacement. Natural latex or wool without added flame retardants. This is the expensive item, and it is genuinely worth doing properly — but on the natural cycle, not as an emergency.
  5. Router on a timer. Free, and see the honesty note under Whole House.

Start here: blackout and a cooler room. You will feel it within days, which is what makes the rest of the list happen.

Kitchen

Why it matters: this is where plastic meets heat, which is the single highest -return change in the whole house.

Cookware. Stainless steel, cast iron and carbon steel are the durable answers, and they are cheaper over a decade than repeatedly replacing coated pans.

On non-stick, the honest position rather than the alarming one: PTFE coatings are generally considered safe at ordinary cooking temperatures. They degrade above roughly 260°C / 500°F, which is hotter than most cooking but well within reach of an empty pan left on a high burner — that is where "polymer fume fever" comes from. The stronger argument is regulatory direction rather than acute risk: Minnesota banned the sale of PFAS-coated cookware from January 2025, with Vermont, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Colorado following between 2026 and 2028. If a product category is being legislated out, replacing it on the natural cycle is simply good sense.

Food storage and reheating. Glass, always, and especially for anything hot. Reheating in plastic is the specific habit worth ending today; it costs nothing and it is where heat and plastic meet most reliably.

Everything else. Wood or steel utensils. Loose-leaf tea or unbleached bags — many tea bags shed plastic directly into near-boiling water. Glass or ceramic mugs rather than plastic pods.

Start here: stop reheating in plastic. It is free, immediate, and requires buying nothing.

Bathroom

Why it matters: hot water, an enclosed space, poor ventilation, and products applied directly to skin daily.

Products. Short, legible ingredient lists. The single highest-yield category to eliminate is synthetic fragrance — it is the easiest to remove, appears in almost everything, and "fragrance" as an ingredient can legally conceal a long list of undeclared components.

Water at the shower head. A hot shower is a high-exposure event: heat opens skin, the enclosure concentrates what volatilises, and you breathe it for ten minutes. A shower filter is inexpensive and is the step most people skip, because drinking water feels like the whole problem.

Ventilation and mould. Run the extractor during and after, every time. Damp bathrooms grow mould, and mould is a genuine, well-evidenced respiratory problem — considerably better established than several things that get more attention.

Start here: drop synthetic fragrance across the whole room.


Utility and Laundry

Why it matters: whatever is in your detergent ends up bound into every fabric you wear and sleep in, then held against skin all day.

  • Fragrance-free detergent. Same argument as the bathroom, applied to every textile you own at once.
  • Skip fabric softener and dryer sheets. Their entire function is depositing a scented coating onto fibres that then sit against your skin.
  • Wash new clothes before wearing. Finishes and dyes come off in the first wash rather than onto you.
  • Synthetic textiles shed microfibres in the wash. A filter bag or an in-machine filter is a cheap partial answer; buying fewer synthetics is the real one.

Start here: switch the detergent. One purchase, and it touches everything.


Living Space

Why it matters: the largest volume of soft furnishing in the house, and the place new materials off-gas hardest.

  • New furniture, paint and flooring off-gas most in the first weeks. If you are buying or decorating, ventilate aggressively and, where possible, let items air before they come into daily use. Low-VOC paint is a genuine, inexpensive upgrade at the moment of purchase and pointless afterwards — so the decision only exists while you are buying.
  • Solid wood over particleboard where budget allows; formaldehyde-based adhesives are the reason.
  • Natural fibre rugs — wool, jute — over synthetic, on replacement.
  • Take shoes off at the door. Free, and it stops a remarkable amount of outdoor material being tracked into the surfaces children sit on.
  • Plants help modestly. Worth having; not an air purification strategy. The famous NASA experiment used sealed chambers, and the effect in a ventilated room is small. Enjoy them for the biophilic benefit and buy a filter for the air.

Start here: shoes off. Then ventilate hard around anything new.


Whole House

Air. Open windows daily, even briefly, even in winter — ventilation beats filtration for most household pollutants and costs nothing. Where you filter, use true HEPA paired with activated carbon: HEPA handles particulates, carbon handles the chemical load, and in a newer, tighter, more synthetic house the chemical load is the larger share.

Water. Filter drinking water at minimum; carbon is the cost-effective floor, reverse osmosis the thorough answer, remineralisation the sensible follow-on.

Radon — the one genuinely dangerous thing on this page. Radon is a natural radioactive gas you cannot see or smell, and it is the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking. The EPA attributes roughly 21,000 US lung cancer deaths a year to it, and recommends acting at 4 pCi/L or above. Test kits are cheap, testing is simple, and levels are highest in basements and ground floors.

Of everything on this page, this is the item where the ratio of risk to effort to check is most lopsided — and it is the one almost nobody does, because it has no wellness-industry marketing behind it.

Light. Bright in the morning, dim and warm in the evening. The highest-yield intervention in the entire house, and free.

Fields. Router on a timer, phone out of the bedroom, ethernet where practical. Stated plainly: the evidence for non-thermal EMF effects at domestic exposure levels is contested, and I will not pretend otherwise. These particular steps are free and have no downside, which is the honest case for them — not certainty.

If You Only Do Five Things

Ranked by effect per unit of effort and cost, not by how serious they sound:

  1. Test for radon. Cheap, one-off, and the only item here with a well-established mortality figure attached.
  2. Stop reheating food in plastic. Free, today.
  3. Make the bedroom genuinely dark and cool. Free, and you feel it this week.
  4. Open the windows daily. Free, and it beats most filtration.
  5. Eliminate synthetic fragrance — detergent, personal care, air fresheners. One shopping decision, applied across the whole house.

Nothing on that list requires a renovation, and together they cover most of the available return. Everything else on this page is refinement.
